1. the supporters or successors of Judas Maccabaeus, the leader of a successful revolt of Jewish patriots against Syria in 166 B.C. The members of his family ruled Palestine as a dynasty from about 141 B.C. to 37 B.C.
2. two historical books of the Old Testament Apocrypha that tell about the revolt. Abbr: Macc.
3. a fraternal and benevolent organization founded in London, Ontario, in 1878, until 1914, called the Knights of the Maccabees.
